What is a Docking Station?

A docking station is a physical docking system that helps you connect your laptop or other device to multiple external devices. Docking stations are also known as "docks". Most docking stations have three or more USB ports, video display port, an Ethernet port, and a headphone jack. Additionally, docking stations often come with an AC adapter to help you keep your laptop or other device powered.

Which Docking-Station should you look for?

Obviously, it depends on your needs but in our experience a versatile docking station should:

  • support latest USB-C standard (or even Thunderbolt)
  • have a power-delivery pass through (preferably a dedicated power supply unit) via USB-C
  • support at least two external displays
  • support at least 2560×1440 (QHD) screen resolution (preferably 4K)
  • a long warranty
