Plugable USBC-MD103 Review 2026 - Specs, Pros & Cons
The Plugable USBC-MD103 is a compact 3-in-1 USB-C adapter for laptops and tablets that need one HDMI display, one USB-A accessory, and charging from the same host port. Its port list is deliberately short: HDMI, a USB-A 5Gbps port, and a USB-C Power Delivery input. It connects through a captive USB-C cable and uses native DisplayPort Alt Mode for video, so there is no DisplayLink driver to install. That also creates the important buying check: the host's USB-C port must support video output for HDMI to work, and it must support USB-C Power Delivery for pass-through charging. Plugable's current product page lists up to 4K at 60Hz on compatible hosts and up to 100W charging, while the older Amazon comparison chart explains the usual constraint behind that claim: 4K at 60Hz needs a laptop with DisplayPort 1.4 support, and other hosts may run the same display at 4K 30Hz. The adapter itself does not include a charger. At Plugable's direct price of $39.95, it is best treated as a small travel adapter for a one-monitor setup, not as a replacement for a full docking station.
Pros & Cons
What We Like
- Small three-port adapter adds HDMI, USB-A, and charging without carrying a larger dock
- Single 4K 60Hz HDMI output is available on compatible DisplayPort 1.4 class USB-C, USB4, or Thunderbolt hosts
- One USB-A 5Gbps port is useful for flash drives, receivers, keyboards, and occasional storage transfers
- No display driver is required, which is useful on managed laptops and borrowed machines
- USB-C pass-through charging supports up to 100W on compatible hosts and chargers
- Two-year coverage and lifetime Plugable support are better than typical generic travel adapters
What Could Be Better
- Only one HDMI display output
Workaround: Choose a dual-monitor MST, DisplayLink, USB4, or Thunderbolt dock if you need more than one external display.
- HDMI depends on the host USB-C port supporting DisplayPort Alt Mode
Workaround: Check the laptop, Chromebook, tablet, or phone documentation for USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode, USB4, or Thunderbolt video support before buying.
- 4K 60Hz needs DisplayPort 1.4 class host support and may fall back to 4K 30Hz
Workaround: Use a host with DisplayPort 1.4 over USB-C and a known-good HDMI cable if 4K 60Hz is required.
- No Ethernet, card reader, audio jack, or additional USB data port
Workaround: Choose the Plugable USBC-7IN1E or a larger hub if wired networking, media cards, or more peripherals stay connected every day.
- Short captive cable limits placement with laptop stands and fixed desk layouts
Workaround: Keep the adapter close to the host port and avoid uncertified USB-C extension cables when video or charging reliability matters.

Compatibility
Plug and play on compatible USB-C, USB4, or Thunderbolt hosts with DisplayPort Alt Mode. Charging also requires USB-C Power Delivery support from the host.
Works as a one-display adapter on compatible USB-C and Thunderbolt Macs. It does not increase the number of external displays supported by an Apple Silicon Mac.
Plugable lists compatible Chromebook systems. HDMI and charging still depend on the Chromebook USB-C port supporting DisplayPort Alt Mode and USB-C Power Delivery.
Plugable's Amazon compatibility table lists Linux hosts with DisplayPort Alt Mode. Video behavior depends on the host hardware, graphics driver, and desktop environment.
Plugable lists Samsung DeX-capable devices among tested systems. Other Android phones and tablets need USB-C video output or desktop-mode support.
Known Issues
HDMI output will not work
Only one HDMI display output
Adapter cannot overcome the Mac's native display limit
Not a guaranteed display solution
Our Verdict
Good
The USBC-MD103 makes sense when the missing port is HDMI and you do not need a drawer full of extras. It is compact, driverless, and backed by Plugable's two-year warranty and lifetime support. Amazon's listing for ASIN B08CL4Y3PJ showed a 4.3 out of 5 rating from 538 global ratings during this review pass, and the same listing describes positive feedback on basic functionality, build quality, and value. B&H customer feedback similarly calls out its compact build and straightforward HDMI, USB, and charging setup. The catch is that this is a basic adapter with hard limits, not a universal display solution. It drives one HDMI display only, has no Ethernet, card reader, audio jack, or second data port, and does not add video to a data-only USB-C port. One Reddit discussion also illustrates the wider Mac issue: the adapter can supply a display connection, but it cannot bypass the external-display limits built into a base M-series Mac. Buy it for hotel desks, meeting rooms, a TV, or an ultraportable that needs a simple HDMI and USB-A bridge. Skip it if you need a wired network, two monitors, faster than 5Gbps storage, a USB-C monitor, or a fixed desk dock with a longer detachable cable.
